The world is changing all around us and it seems like there is something new every day. This includes the way we all work. Here at O’Brien Insurance, our service to you has never wavered but the way we do business has changed on the surface. This “new normal” we are all facing has caused us to shift the ways in which we work with our team and how we interact with our clients.
Working from home also changes the coverage on your renters or homeowners insurance. If you have found yourself working from home please ask yourself the following questions.
Do you have clients and/or employees visiting the home, and how often?
If a friend or family member is hurt on your property, your homeowner’s insurance will cover your liability exposure. Your liability coverage does not automatically extend to business risks. If you are working from home and invite a client and/or employee over to your property and they are injured, your homeowner’s coverage would not pay out for their injuries.
Do you have equipment or protected information in your care, custody, or control?
Your homeowner’s insurance will not cover problems that come up because of your home-based business. Neither will a personal umbrella liability policy, which also excludes business-related problems.
If you are an employer, require employees to check their homeowner’s insurance coverage. This ensures that their homes and property will be covered in the event of damage done during working hours.
Are you delivering products with your own vehicle?
All of the above also goes for your vehicle. Don’t assume that your car insurance will cover you when making runs that are business-related. The moment you start using your vehicle to exchange goods or services for money, it has become a business vehicle and requires different coverage.
If any of the above apply to you, please contact us to be sure you are insured properly on your renters or homeowners insurance.
